Wild Swimming

Cold Water Benifits

With our unpredictable Scottish weather, running into the North Sea in the great outdoors may not be what immediately springs to mind when planning a relaxing day out. Yet, a recent report published by Outdoor Swimmer revealed that the number of people participating in outdoor swimming in the UK has risen between 1.5 and 3 times since 2019

Many say don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! And for those who have tried it, they now say they can’t imagine life without cold-water swimming! The truth is that cold-water swimming can provide you with a vast host of benefits when done safely.

Still not convinced?

Cold-water swimming can:

IMPROVE YOUR MOOD

The most frequently reported benefit of cold-water swimming is the boost it can give to your mood. Experts have found that regular cold-water exposure could improve mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. You can’t beat the euphoric feeling of getting out of the water and back into warm clothes or into a Sauna!

HELP YOU CONNECT TO NATURE

When you’re in the sea it’s all about the here and now. Focusing on your breath, your movement in the water and how cold you are!

BENEFIT METABOLISM

Some scientists have found benefits to metabolism from cold water exposure, for example through the activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT) in our bodies.

ENHANCED RECOVERY

Exercise can lead to pain and sore muscles, also known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Many elite athletes use cold therapy (also known as cryotherapy) to support muscle recovery and reduce pain after a bout of extreme exercise.

Sauna Benefits

FLUSHES TOXINS

Due to the heat of a sauna, the core body temperature begins to rise. Sweat production is primarily designed to cool the body, and is composed of 99% water. However, deep sweating in a sauna can help reduce levels of lead, copper, zinc, nickel, mercury and chemicals - which are all toxins commonly absorbed just from interacting with our daily environments.

RELIEVES STRESS

The heat in the sauna helps us to relax and regulates the level of cortisol in our blood. Cortisol is the hormone that is released when we’re stressed, and too high levels of cortisol can lead to many health issues such as problems with the immune system and with sleeping. Sauna bathing reduces the levels of cortisol in our blood, and instead, it stimulates the production of serotonin. Serotonin is our “happy hormone” that makes us feel good.

HELPS FIGHT ILLNESS

As the body is exposed to the heat of a sauna and steam (in the case of traditional saunas), it produces white blood cells more rapidly, which in turn helps to fight illnesses and helps to kill viruses. In addition, saunas can relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of sinus congestion from colds or allergies.

IMPROVES OVERALL HEALTH, WELLNESS AND PERFORMANCE

Not surprisingly, sauna bathers most frequently cite “stress reduction” as the number one benefit of sauna use. Regular sauna bathing is a wonderful, feel-good and good-for-you addition to your overall health and wellness plan.

IMPROVES HEART HEALTH

In the high temperatures of a traditional or infrared sauna, skin heats up and core body temperature rises. In response to these increased heat levels, the blood vessels near the skin dilate and “cardiac output/circulation” increases. Regular sauna usage has been shown to reduce the risk of all-cause mortality and fatal cardiac incidents along with reduced risk of stroke and hypertension.

AIDS IN RECOVERY AFTER EXERCISE

Saunas relax muscles and soothe aches/pains in both muscles and joints. After physical activity, use the heat and steam of a sauna to promote muscle relaxation by helping to reduce muscle tension and eliminate lactic acid and other toxins that may be present.

CLEANSES SKIN

When the body begins to produce sweat via deep sweating, the skin is then cleansed and dead skin cells are replaced - keeping your skin in good working condition. Cleansing of the pores has been shown to improve the capillary circulation, while giving the skin a softer-looking quality.

OFFERS RECREATIONAL AND SOCIAL BENEFITS

While the social benefit is rarely talked about, it’s actually quite important. The sauna can be a private, personal area of relaxation and solitude. However, it can just as easily be a relaxing environment for socializing with family, friends and soon-to-be friends. The sauna room environment is conducive to open, intimate and quiet conversation.

JUST FEELS GOOD

A sauna not only feels good, it’s good for your body. Whether it’s the physiological changes that occur during the warmth of a sauna, or if it’s simply the time spent in the calming and still retreat of the sauna. As we progress through our stressful everyday lives, the sauna provides a pampering retreat - where we can relax and restore body and soul. Sauna bathing truly makes you “Feel Better”, “Look Better” and “Sleep Better”!

About Debbie!

My name's Debbie I'm an Aberdeen Quine, grew up on Urquhart Street in the city centre so Aberdeen is close to my heart. I’ve known Fittie all my life.

My life has seen me leave school and train in the hair and beauty industry, where my skills in making beauty products to take into your sauna experience comes into play, I’m also a fully qualified massage therapist.

As the years have gone on I have had various health issues which have resulted in me having emergency gall bladder removal surgery, this led me nicely into my next venture Veganism.

Teaching people how to veganise their food by doing various workshops, events, and eventually helping run Aberdeens first and only fully vegan cafe bonobo (sadly now closed) along with a group of people that I can only call my tribe.

Then lockdown happened and my friends and I started swimming in the North Sea, whit! I hear ya say the North Sea, aye! I feel that the health benefits of sea swimming outweigh the fact it’s the North Sea.

I’m currently going through perimenopause so the cold dipping is great for my mental clarity. The game changer for me was the heat from mobile saunas. I couldn't believe how good I felt after a sea swim then a sauna!

That's why I started my mobile Sauna. Hot and cold therapy has so many benefits and I get to spend all my time at the beach! I'm all about bringing people together, wellness, happiness, yoga, sound baths, and nature.

So why nae come by and say hi at Sea Biscuit Sauna?
